My two and a half year old son wanted a pet that he could hold. I have had a variety of pets before being a mom and considered which animal would be the most suitable. I even got online to get the opinion of "animal pros" on the web. Then I decided to go for rats- mainly because I was familiar with their sweet and tolerant personalities. They are a great size for a little boy to hold. And when they are put down they don't run off into the furniture and walls!

The next step was to locate a breeder. Getting them from a pet shop would be convenient, but I wanted to be certain that my son would have a good experience. I considered that rats from a breeder would be handled often and also healthy. Lavender Haven Rattery was referred to me as a "reputable breeder of rats". So, I emailed Lavender Haven and checked out the web site. It turned out that I had known Cara a few years back. It was neat to be in contact with her now for pets.

I was able to show my son, Andrew, pictures of the rats we were getting before we met them. Andrew looked forward to having them and was completely delighted over them. That excitement hasn't worn off. Every day Andrew asks to hold Winslow and Homer first thing. He likes carrying the rats around and feeding them snacks. The rats have a great home, receiving lots of attention and a variety of tasty food. My husband and I are both pleased by their temperaments. We have really had a good experience with Winslow and Homer. I don't think there could be any pet more suitable!
